About the university
Central South University is located in Changsha, Hunan Province, a famous historical and cultural city in China, covering an area of 3.17 million square meters. It straddles both sides of the Xiangjiang River, is adjacent to the towering Yuelu Mountain, and faces the surging Xiang River. It has an elegant environment and pleasant scenery, making it an ideal place for learning and studying. The university has 30 secondary colleges, three large-scale Class A comprehensive hospitals, namely Xiangya Hospital, Xiangya Second Hospital, and Xiangya Third Hospital, which are known as “Southern Xiangya”, and Xiangya Stomatological Hospital.
Central South University was formed by the merger of the former Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology in April 2000. The predecessor of the former Central South University of Technology was the Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy founded in 1952, and the predecessor of the former Changsha Railway Institute was the Central South Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture founded in 1953. The main disciplines of the two schools can be traced back to the mining and railway sciences of the Hunan Higher Industrial School founded in 1903. The predecessor of the former Hunan Medical University was the Xiangya Medical College founded in 1914, which is one of the earliest Western medicine colleges in my country.
With a century of history, Central South University has adapted to the general trend of China’s higher education system reform, promoted the university spirit with “unity of knowledge and action, and practical application” as its core, and strived to practice the school spirit of “being kind, truth-seeking, aesthetic, and tolerant”. It has adhered to its own characteristics in running schools, served the major needs of the country and society, worked together to forge ahead, reformed and innovated, and pursued excellence, and its comprehensive strength and overall level have been greatly improved.
The school has a complete range of disciplines, including non-ferrous metals, medicine, rail transit and other disciplines, covering 11 major disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary disciplines, and radiating military science. The school is an independent degree-granting review unit, and currently has five disciplines selected as national “double first-class” construction disciplines, including mathematics, materials science and engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, and transportation engineering; 19 disciplines including materials science, engineering, clinical medicine, computer science, chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, neuroscience and behaviour, mathematics, molecular biology and genetics, general social sciences, immunology, psychiatry and psychology, earth science, environmental science and ecology, agricultural science, physics, microbiology, economics and business, are among the top 1% of basic scientific indicators in the world, among which materials science, engineering, clinical medicine, computer science, chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology are among the top 1/1000 in the world.
The school adheres to the principle of cultivating people with moral integrity and quality first, and strives to explore and improve new models of talent training. The school currently has 103 undergraduate majors, including 72 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 84 national first-class undergraduate courses, and 24 national teaching achievement awards. The school took the lead in establishing an innovative senior engineering talent experimental class in China, and is one of the first pilot universities in the Ministry of Education’s excellent engineer, excellent physician, and excellent legal talent education and training program. It was selected as one of the first pilot universities in the Ministry of Education’s “Strengthening Basics Plan” and a pilot university for eight-year medical education (doctoral degree in medicine). It was selected as one of the first batch of universities with typical graduate employment experience in the country, the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and the national demonstration base for mass entrepreneurship and innovation, becoming one of the 10 most popular universities among my country’s top 100 companies.
The school insists on targeting major national and social needs, deeply promoting collaborative innovation, and actively serving the main battlefield of national economic construction and national defence modernization.
There are 31 national innovation platforms and 16 think tank research institutions selected in the China Think Tank Index. Since 2000, the university has won 112 national science and technology awards, including 18 first prizes in national science and technology (including special prizes and innovation team awards). 10 projects were selected as “Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in Chinese Universities” and the university was selected as one of the first batch of national intellectual property demonstration universities.
The university adheres to the principle of open education and has active international cooperation and exchanges. It is one of the first universities in China to pass the quality certification for studying in China. It has established long-term cooperative relations with 265 universities and research institutions in 55 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, and Russia. It has carried out extensive industry-university-research cooperation with many multinational corporate groups, and initiated and participated in 13 international university alliances. It has been approved as 12 national discipline innovation and talent introduction bases, 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, 3 projects, and 2 Confucius Institutes.
The school firmly grasps the socialist direction of running schools, always adheres to the principal responsibility system under the leadership of the Party Committee, comprehensively improves the scientific level of party building and ideological and political work in the school, and provides strong ideological, political and organizational guarantees for reform, development and stability. The school has been awarded the title of National Advanced University for Party Building and Ideological and Political Work, National Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization Construction, National Advanced Model Unit for Grassroots Ideological and Political Work, and National Civilized Campus.
The construction and development of the school has received the cordial care and full recognition of the leaders of the Party and the country. In recent years, more than 50 leaders of the Party and the country, including General Secretary Xi Jinping and 10 members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, have visited the school and highly praised the school’s reform and innovation, talent training, scientific research, social services and other work.

According to the regulations of Ministry of Education of P. R. China, international students must purchase comprehensive medical insurance while studying in China. International students who are admitted without insurance funded must purchase the insurance at their own expense. Uninsured students cannot register.

Eligibility:
- Non-Chinese citizens with valid foreign passports.
- Good health and meet visa/residence permit standards.
- Doctoral applicants must have a master’s degree equivalent to Chinese universities.
- Friendly to China, excellent academic performance, and law-abiding.
- For Chinese-taught programs, an HSK (level V) certificate or proof of Chinese instruction is required.
- Must meet age requirements for scholarships.
