General requirements for foreign students

When applying to Chinese universities, international students must meet the following general requirements:

General Requirement

  • Passport

    A valid passport is required for visa purposes. 

     
  • Visa

    An X1 visa is required for students who plan to study in China for more than 180 days. The visa must be applied for at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General. 

     
  • Certificate of no criminal record

    This certificate must be valid for within six months of the application submission date. 

     
  • Academic documents

    This includes a certificate or diploma from the last graduated school and an academic transcript. 

     
  • Language proficiency

    A Chinese/English language proficiency certificate is required. For students from non-English speaking countries, a TOEFL or IELTS score is typically required. 

     
  • Financial support

    Proof of financial support is required. 

     
  • Letter of guarantee

    A parent or legal guardian must sign a declaration confirming responsibility for the student. 

     
  • Application deadline

    The application deadline for the spring semester is usually mid-July, and the deadline for the autumn semester is usually late April. 

     

Depending on the university or study program, other documents may be required. 

Most Chinese universities offer some courses taught in English, and there are programs taught in English at the Bachelor, Master, PhD, and non-degree levels.
