Hainan Medical University, the sole public medical school in Hainan Free Trade Port, was originally established as Hai Qiang Medical Technology School in 1947 and later as Hainan University Medical College in 1948. Over its 70-year history, it has trained over 70,000 high-quality medical and health professionals.

Located in Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, the university operates two campuses: the Chengxi campus in Longhua District and the under-construction Guilinyang campus in Jiangdong New District. The institution features a comprehensive education system with 20 teaching units, offering programs for specialist students, undergraduates, master’s and doctoral students, and international students. The university has 14,605 full-time students, including 58 doctoral students, 1,102 master’s students, 10,347 undergraduates, 633 international students, 2,327 specialist students, and 80 pre-baccalaureate students.

Hainan Medical University offers 30 undergraduate majors across medicine, science, and management, with 52 national first-class majors and 2 national specialties. It has achieved significant milestones, including national first-class experimental teaching centers and clinical teaching demonstration centers. Clinical medicine is ranked in the top 1% globally according to ESI, and both pharmacy and clinical medicine have passed the Ministry of Education’s professional certification. The university boasts 9 national clinical key specialties and 7 first-class disciplines in Hainan Province.

In 2006, the university received a “good” rating in the general higher education evaluation and repeated this success in 2017. Its faculty includes 1,182 full-time teachers, with 181 professors and 43.49% holding doctoral degrees. The university features 8 academician workstations, 9 flexible academicians, 4 “Changjiang Scholars,” and 28 State Council experts.
Specializing in tropical medicine, the university has established key laboratories in tropical translational medicine and emergency research. It hosts two SCI-indexed tropical medicine journals and has a strong impact in the field. The university has 101 teaching practice and internship bases, with several affiliated hospitals providing substantial support for clinical teaching.

The University Promote global cooperation, partnering with institutions such as the University of Nebraska, Basel University, and the University of Hong Kong. It has also established international research centres and alliances, including a tropical medicine alliance spanning 30 countries.
